We just recently went hands-on with the US version and hands-on with the Broadband Adapter after going hands-on during the Japanese beta test (which came just shortly after we had gone hands-on with the unfinished Japanese version), so we didn't have much of our hands left to go, er, on with at the event -- but that didn't stop us from keeping our eyes and ears open at the event to let you know what went on.

After some playtime in Dolby's third floor main lobby (where we were able to once again sample the four-player split-screen and online networked versions), Sega called the assembled gaming press into Dolby's swanky, soundproofed movie theater to showcase the official trailer for the title. After the footage concluded, Yuji Naka appeared on stage to introduce his game in person -- and in English.

After his introduction, Naka went online with the game right there on the Dolby theater's big screen to meet up with gamers and co-workers in Japan and Los Angeles. Connected via Nintendo's little publicized (make that: not at all publicized) Broadband Adapter, everything went smooth as can be and the gameplay didn't show a sign of lag after the initial connection was made. Naka showcased one of the game's lobbies, and after making his god-like entrance as a level 200 character named Sonic, the famed Sega designer demoed the ease of use of PSO's chat system by introducing himself on screen with "I am Naka".

In the brief Episode II battle demo, Naka showed off some of the visual improvements over the original Dreamcast version. The upgrades are subtle, but PSO junkies will find plenty of added new special effects, better textures, and best of all, full progressive scan (480P) and Dolby Pro-Logic II support for home theater buffs.

After the demo, Naka explained to IGN the exact nature of the Game Boy Advance / GameCube link-up. Only one of the GBA goodies is actually stored locally on the disk, every other GBA bonus is downloaded from Sega's servers when unlocked in the GameCube game. For example, to get a fully playable GBA Nights game, players have to successfully complete the "Nights Quest" in December. The game can then be downloaded to your GBA via Nintendo's N-Port feature (meaning the data transfers directly to the Game Boy Advance system, without the need of a cartridge). Other GBA goodies, such as versions of Puyo Pop and Chu Chu Rocket (as well as a slew of unannounced apps and games) will be made available periodically, so GBA owners will never know what they're going to get next. The only pre-made GBA bonus download stored on the GameCube disk is a special reward for Sonic Adventure 2: Battle players, which is unlocked upon completion of the "Yellow Fake" quest.

Good Life,
